There are hundreds of wedding colour options available to brides, and thousands of ways these colours are combined creatively, so it is no surprise that many brides find the process of colour selection and coordination quite challenging. Wedding Feferity has put together a three-part colour series to help you out if you are struggling with this. Your wedding colours will set the vibe and mood you want to create on your big day. They will also allow you to express your personality and creative side. Picking colours is usually a nerve racking experience, but here are some questions which will help you simplify the process.
Does your wedding have a theme? If you are pretty sure of the theme you want, then this makes it somewhat easier. A winter wonderland wedding will feature lots of white and softer colours like sky blue, an old Hollywood wedding will have some black in it’s palette, while a royal wedding isn’t complete without gold. A themed wedding has colours that are usually associated with it, so all that’s left for you to do is figure out how to incorporate these colours into the different wedding elements.
Do you have any personal preferences? If you have had a favourite colour since forever, your wedding is the best time to go crazy about it. If it’s not a typical wedding colour (e.g black), then you can choose another main colour and use your favourite as the accent colour.
Are you inspired by other weddings? Looking back at some weddings you attended, do you recall any which had colour schemes you loved? Or did you see any colours that are a no-no for you? You should check out our wedding colour center or view wedding pictures from real weddings for some more inspiration.
What does your wedding venue look like? The fixed look of some venues is often over looked. Most venues are neutral in colour, but you find the occasional red carpet, green hotel chairs, yellow curtains and blue walls, which will significantly affect to what extent you can play with other colours. Make sure you check out your venue before you finalize your colours.
Popular Wedding Colour Questions asked by Brides
How many wedding colours can I use? 2 colours is the standard, but 3 will work perfectly, especially if your two main colours are very bold. Remember, it’s not about the number of colours, but how they are combined. An all white wedding can look as stunning as a 7 colour-schemed wedding.
Where should I use my wedding colours? Pretty much anywhere, including your decor, bridesmaids dresses, shoes, florals, cake, aso-ebi, wedding stationery, wedding favors (souvenirs), lighting, and any other places you can think of. This is your opportunity to get creative.
What if I don’t my wedding to be over-coordinated? Exact colour matches of everything could be quite overwhelming. If you think there’s too much coordination in a specific area, then it’s best to introduce a neutral colour such as white, ivory, and cream to tone things down a bit. So, if you have a navy blue and pink scheme, go for a cream coloured cake with pink roses and navy blue ribbons, instead of an all blue cake with pink roses and pink ribbons.
How exactly do I go about pairing up colours? Figuring out which colours will look great together is not easy for most people. We have covered this in-depth in the second part of our series- How to Combine Colours For Your Wedding.
Do I even need to have official wedding colours to start with? Well, Yes and No. Yes if you are a Nigerian Bride. It will make your life much easier. No, because it’s your special day, and you have the right to do anything you want! If you want to learn more about how colours are used in typical Nigerian weddings (both traditional and white), then check out the third part of the series – Choosing Wedding Colours for Nigerian Wedding.
So are you set on any specific colours yet? How did you choose or will you be choosing them?

Hi Lade, I’m not too sure of the pink and purple. Shades of green (olive green, forest green), brown and a different shade of peach, gold, and navy blue will work better. Hope this helps
Sayo C. says
Hello Ajayi, it’s good at least know what you do not like. What colours are you looking for by the way? Traditional or white wedding, attire or decor? For traditional weddings, white/shades of white is quite popular at the moment. For white weddings you are spoilt for choice with so many other colours – pink, yellow, blue, green? Check out the rest of our site for real wedding inspiration and lovely images in our photo gallery
